The Nilgiris: In order to mitigate the occurrence of accidents on hilly terrains, the Tamil Nadu Highways Department in collaboration with a private firm have come up with an idea to install Korean rolling barriers, in a pilot phase.

Rolling barriers which are known to provide cushioning effect during a crash, reduces the high-speed effect, reducing the road accidents at steep curved roads as in mountainous terrains. flat roads, curved roads sections, ramps, medians, entrances/exit ramps in the parking garage etc.

The rolling barriers are made with EVA or foam rubber that absorbs the impact energy. The rollers convert the energy into rotational energy and propel the vehicle forward, reducing the chances of the vehicle breaking through the barrier.

The rolling barriers, that are used in Korea are now being introduced on a trial basis in the Nilgiris to reduce road accidents. As Ooty -Mysore road via Kallati is prone to regular accidents, the officials from transport department have proposed to lay the rolling barriers in that stretch which was 36 hair pin bends.

If the trial proves fruitful, then Korean rolling barriers will be installed on all mountain roads all over the country, the officials said.
