Coimbatore: G. Govindaraj, Registrar of Co-operative Societies, who is the State Election Commission-nominated special observer for the district, inspected the polling booths and vote counting centres for the upcoming rural local body polls.

He also convened a meeting at the Collectorate with the District Collector and District Election Officer, K. Rajamani, District Superintendent of Police, Sujit Kumar, Thasildhar - Sangeetha, Palanisamy, Assistant Election Officer and several government officials.
A total of 6,956 candidates from 12 Panchayats will contest in the rural local body elections from Coimbatore district, which will be held in two phases on December 27 and 30. As the election dates are nearing, the Special Observer for the District and the District Election Officer are carrying out inspections at all polling booths and to ensure all arrangements are done as per the rules.
Special Observer, G. Govindarajan and District Collector K. Rajamani urged the Assitant Election Officers of the respective Panchayats to carry out inspection to check readiness of polling boxes and other equipments required on polling day.
They also ordered to check on basic facilities including drinking water, toilet, electrical and if other amenities are arranged at the voting centres in Kinathukaadavu Panchayat Union, DELC Girls Higher Secondary school, Government Higher Secondary schools.
The officials also stressed that uncluttered entry and exit points to the polling station should be provided. And, the queues should be monitored to avoid delays.
Out of the 1520 polling booths in Coimbatore district, a total of 6080 ballots are ready to be sent to the polling booths. In addition, 12,060 polling officers will be on duty on the day of polling. Also, 3894 officials have been assigned for counting process.
