Entertainment tax issue: Cinema theatres will not function from Mar 1, 2020 - Tirupur Subramaniam

"Theaters across Tamil Nadu will not function from March 1, 2020, if the entertainment tax levied by the government remains unaltered", said Subramaniam, President of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association at a meeting held I Coimbatore on Tuesday.

"Theaters across Tamil Nadu will not function from March 1, 2020, if the entertainment tax levied by the government remains unaltered", said Subramaniam, President of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association at a meeting held I Coimbatore on Tuesday.

More than 250 theatre owners from Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode and Tirupur took part in the meeting convened by the association to discuss on the entertainment tax issue.

Speaking at the meeting, President of the association, Subramaniam said, " No other state in India, other than TN collects entertainment tax. Regarding the issue, we made a representation to the CM, last year. However, there has been no reduction in the tax levied by the government. Theater's pay 8% entertainment tax, thus resulting in huge income loss. If this continues, we have decided to shut the theatres from March 1, 2020."

Talking about movies that flop and digital rights, he said, "Even if the movies of popular stars are not well received by the audience, they earn a bounty. It's the theatres and producers who suffer severe losses."

He suggested that in such cases, the actors should compensate the loss of the producers by acting for a lesser fee in the next movie.

"Similarly, the producers should give digital movie rights only after 100 days after the movie is released in theatres. If any producers give digital rights before 100 days, we will not screen the movies of such producers in theatres", he stated.
