Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Farmer's Association and the public have petitioned the District Collector to revoke the orders issued to set up a stone quarry in Oratukkuppu Village in Chettipalayam Town Panchayat here on Monday.
The petitioners stated that the District Administration has granted permission to a private company called 'Ultra Ready Mix' to set up a quarry in Oratukkuppu Village for the period 2018 to 2023. They alleged that all their previous petitions to repeal the order had gone in vain.
They noted that there are already six stone quarries in the area and that the public and farmers have been immensely affected by them. The public lamented that along with ground water contamination, the new stone quarry will lead to axing down of 500 plus coconut trees in the vicinity.
"The explosions used to stone quarry has led to major cracks in our houses. And, we have represented the issue to Minister Velumani, however no action was initiated", they informed.
The petitioners apprised that if their pleas are unheard, they would resort to protests.
