Jewellers extend strike till March 7

Jewellery manufacturers and retailers here will not operate their units or shops for three more days (till March 7) demanding withdrawal of Excise Duty proposed in the Union Budget this year on jewellery.

B. Muthuvenkatraman, president of Coimbatore Jewellery Manufacturers’ Association, said it has been decided by the All India Gem and Jewellery Federation to extend the three-day strike by three more days to draw the attention of the Government.

Excise Duty

The manufacturers here had a meeting on Friday and the association office-bearers explained to the members the procedures that they would have to follow when Excise Duty is collected on jewellery.

“Jeweller sector attracted Excise Duty till the late 1980s and the manufacturers are aware of the procedures involved,” he said.
