Tirupur: Requesting to stop the construction of police station in their area, more than a hundred weavers from Tirupur district met K. Vijayakarthikeyan, District Collector to submit a petition, on Thursday.
Tirupur: Requesting to stop the construction of police station in their area, more than a hundred weavers from Tirupur district met K. Vijayakarthikeyan, District Collector to submit a petition, on Thursday.
Livelihood of more than three hundred families from Avinashi and Rakkiapalayam in Tirupur district depends on weaving. Though the weavers earn very low margins, they have been into weaving for several decades. The weavers in this area have been using the ground close to their area for drying the colored yarns which is an important process before weaving. After dyeing and drying the yarn it is converted to thread and is loaded as warp and then it is loaded into the loom for actual weaving.
In this scenario, works are underway to construct a police station in the aforesaid ground. The weavers allege that no prior information was given to them regarding the move and workers are now removing stones and structures installed by them to dry the yarns.
Aggreived by the construction, the Weavers jointly petitioned the Tirupur District Collector to stop the construction works and instead find another alternate place for constructing a police station for Thirumuruganpoondi jurisdiction.
They lamented that, "If the grounds are dug for construction, our livelihoods will become questionable."
District Collector, K. Vijayakarthikeyan, who received their petition assured to take appropriate action.
Meanwhile, the Weavers notified that they would stage a one-day hunger strike at Rakkiapalayam on Monday.
