Chinnayya (53), Pollachi-based Jewellery merchant was on his way to his hometown after procuring jewels from a jewellery shop in Big Bazaar Street here. Earlier, Chinnayya had given RS. 24 lakhs of gold bars to a jewellery making factory in Selvapuram. He was here today to collect the jewels made out of the bars.
While he was travelling in an auto from Big Bazaar street to Ukkadam bus stand, a gang of men stopped him near Siddhi Vinayagar temple and said they were cops and had to check his belongings. Believing their words, Chinnayya got down from the auto and permitted them to check his bags.
Later, after the men left, Chinnayya was shell-shocked to find that the entire 650 gms of jewellery had gone missing.
He immediately lodged a complaint at the Big Bazaar Street Crime branch Police station.
A special team has been formed to investigate the broad daylight robbery. CCTV footages from the spot are being analysed.
