Coimbatore: Plastic wastes generated in the city may soon be made useful as the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) is planning to utilise 5% of plastic wastes in laying and repairing roads.
Coimbatore: Plastic wastes generated in the city may soon be made useful as the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) is planning to utilise 5% of plastic wastes in laying and repairing roads.
Exploring the possibilities of the same, the CCMC has decided to mix 5% of plastic wastes along with the hot bitumen mix.
There are about 4500 streets in the city, and around 740 km of road stretch is being maintained by the CCMC. While roads are often dug up for varied reasons including repair works of faulty sewer or drinking water pipelines, emebedding electric and data connection cables and others, the public allege that poor maintanence of the roads and not filling the potholes in a timely manner attribute to complete damage of roads.
Commenting on this, Prasanna Ramasamy, Deputy Commissioner of CCMC, said "Cement companies have come forward to buy plastics wastes. In a bid to reduce the accumulation of plastic wastes and recycle them, we have decided to use 5% of the plastics in laying and repairing roads. Around 19 tonnes of plastic waste will be shredded and converted into granules and mixed with the tar."
