The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris District Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a woman allegedly cheating hundreds of people of several lakhs of rupees by promising them home and vehicles loans.
The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris District Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a woman allegedly cheating hundreds of people of several lakhs of rupees by promising them home and vehicles loans.
According to police reports, Rubini Priya from Pollachi has cheated several crores of rupees from people especially women self help groups promising to help them acquire bank loans at attractive interest rates.
Among the victims, Kulanthaivelu, a resident of Emerald in the Nilgiris District lodged a complaint with the Crime Branch police on Rubini Priya stating that she has not settled his money even after three years.
Based on the complaint, police arrested Rohini Priya in Pollachi. Following this, more than 30 victims also demanded for their money and laid seige to the crime branch office at Ooty.
The enraged victims alleged that Rubini Priya collected over Rs. 18 lakhs from women self-help groups by promising to secure home/ vehicle/ personal loans. However, after collecting a ransom she eloped with the money and never responded to the calls, the victims complain.
Following her arrest, several victims across Tamil Nadu have gathered in the Nilgiris with the hope of getting their money back.
