Coimbatore: Residents of Sivalingapuram near Ondipudur staged a sit-in protest at the North Coimbatore Highway Divisional Engineers's Office on Tuesday demanding the construction of the promised a bridge over the railway crossing in the area.
The sudden protest by the residents of Sivalingapuram caused a stir in the office.
Upon hearing the news of the protest, MP P.R. Natarajan visited the Highway Divisional Engineer's office and heard the demands of the protestors.
"Over a long time, the railway crossing in Sivalingapuram has been causing difficulty for the two wheelers on this route. We have been requesting for the construction of an over bridge for many years. And, in 2011, the late CM Jayalalitha issued orders for the construction of an overpass above the railway line. However, the project was not realised", told the residents.
The recent announcement of constructing an underpass instead of an overpass has come as a rude shock to the us, they alleged.
"There are more than 2000 houses in this area. If an underpass is built, water logging would be a major issue during rainy season", said the residents of Sivalingapuram.
The residents pointed that an underpass would make it impossible for an ambulance to reach the place during emergency situations. "Hence, we want an overpass that was promised by the late CM Jayalalitha", they demanded.
After hearing their demands, MP PR Natarajan agreed that an overpass was the long term solution to the problem. The MP promised to discuss the issue with the Collector who presently is held up in local body election works.
Following his assurance, the people gave up the protest and dispersed.
