Coimbatore: The Saibaba Colony Police on Tuesday arrested three people allegedly belonging to the notorious sandalwood smuggling gang armed with dangerous weapons. The accused were caught red-handed while they were all set to execute their plan to axe down a sandalwood tree in Saibaba Colony, in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The accused were caught red-handed while they were all set to execute their plan to axe down a sandalwood tree in Saibaba Colony, in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Acting on a tip off, that a gang of strangers are meandering around Saibaba Colony and their activities are dubious, the police intensified their night patrol. In the wee hours of Tuesday, the Police spotted a gang of seven people and tried to stop them. As they escaped from the spot, the Police chased them and at last nabbed three of the gang. The Police have confirmed that the trio belong to the Sandalwood smuggling gang.
The accused have been identified as Govindaraj (21), Vishnu (20) and Anbu (27) from Tirupattur. The police seized wood cutting tools and are on the look out for other four members who escaped.
It may be recalled that this gang has been involved in sandalwood smuggling at various places including RS Puram, Saibaba Colony, Singanallur, Kattoor and Kuniamuthur. The CCTV footage of the gang roaming around the streets of Iyer Colony near Vasantha Mills road in Singanallur sent shock waves among the people and the police.
Following the release of the CCTV footage, the public urged the police to intensify night patrols and nab the gang as they have been spotted in various occassions with deadly weapons.
