Coimbatore: Expressing his condolence in person to the kin and kith of the 17 people who were killed in a wall collapse tragedy in Mettupalayam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) Leader, Thol. Thirumavazhavan slammed that the wall collapse was not an accident but a clear casteist act.

Addressing the media he said, "The death of 17 people including women and children in Nadur has shocked and deeply saddened the State of Tamil Nadu. The 25-foot wall which collapsed is built by a caste Hindu, Sivasubramaniam, to avoid the sight of the Dalits living in Kannappan Nagar. Citing their safety, several pleas by the Dalits to demolish the wall was ignored by the officials which ultimately has resulted in the death of 17 people."
He also alleged that drainage water from the house was directed into the Dalit area causing severe inconvenience to them. "Moreover, the tragedy could be averted, if the wall was built by erecting adequate pillars. How did the officials permit to build a wall of this size, so weak?", he questioned.
He added saying, "In several instances, the owner of the house has outrightly exhibited caste discrimination. The owner must hence be tried under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act)."
The VCK leaders also condemned the attack and arrest of Nagai Thiruvalluvan, leader of Tamil Puligal Katchi who protested on behalf of his organisation for the bereaved families of the victims. the other brutal attacks made by police.
He concluded by urging that justice must be provided to the victims, on priority.
