Green gram worth Rs.15.34-crores imported, says TNAU


Green gram is an important crop which is cultivated over a large area in India. As per the estimate of the agricultural ministry the green gram was cultivated in 33.8-lakh hectares of land and 16-lakh ton of grains were produced. Rajasthan is the largest cultivator of green gram in India, followed by Maharastra, Andhra, Gujarat, Bihar and Tamilnadu. The cultivation of green gram in Rajasthan happens around this time of the year. During 2014-2015 year green gram was cultivated in 2.3-lakh hectares of land in Tamilnadu. Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thoothukudi, Kadalur, and Thanjavur are the largest green gram cultivating districts in Tamilnadu. India has imported green grams worth Rs. 13.34-crores in 2015-2016. Tanzania is the biggest exporter of green gram to India followed by Mozambique.

Green gram is not available for local markets due to which the price of green gram is expected to rise. Green gram has been stocked expecting a price rise. The price forecasting program which is been practiced in Agriculture and Rural development center in the Tamilnadu Agricultural University has studied the prices of green gram for the past fifteen years in Viluppuram regulated sales center. On basis of the research the price of quality green gram is predicted to be within Rs.47 and Rs.50 per kg.
