They jointly petitioned to the District Collector on Friday, to look into their plea of replacing the dilapidated housing units with new homes.
All 960 houses in the 35-year-old Singanallur housing unit here are in a dilapidated state. After all their petitions went unheard, the residents have now sought the help of the district administration to get new homes.
However, the recent political interference by opposition parties have perturbed the residents who fear that if the issue is politicised they might face more complications and not redressal.
Addressing the media here at the District Collectorate, a few residents representating the housing board, expressed their disapproval over the three-year-old statement of Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam which said nothing can be done for houses that are already sold.
"However, our repeated requests have yielded results. As the State government has now agreed to meet our demands. In this scenario, a few residents who are affiliated to political parties are trying to divert and politicise the whole issue for their vested interest", they alleged.
They added that interference of political parties will only hamper the process and lead to undue delays. Hence, they requested all political parties to stay away from the issue for the welfare of the people.
The residents further requested the district administration to make a recommendation to the State government on the poor state of their housing units which might collapse anytime.
They apprised that the District Collector has promised to constitute a committee to thoroughly inspect the state of the housing units and submit a report.
It may be noted that DMK MLA N Karthik of Singanallur Constituency has held various protests against the issue and even presented the issue in the 2019-20, budget session of the Assembly. Even a couple of days before, the MLA announced of a massive protest against the issue on December 13.
