Coimbatore: The International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) during their annual conference at Muscat, Oman recently have honored Dr.S. Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospital with the prestigious ‘Harold Tscherene teaching award’.
Coimbatore: The International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT) during their annual conference at Muscat, Oman recently have honored Dr.S. Rajasekaran of Ganga Hospital with the prestigious ‘Harold Tscherene teaching award’.
Adding to his acheivement, the globally renowned Spine Surgeon from Coimbatore, Dr Rajasekaran who is the Director of Spine Surgery of Ganga Hospital is the first Asian Orthopaedic Surgeon to receive this award.
Notably, last year Dr. S Rajasekaran took over as the International Chair of AOSpine, the World’s largest body of Spine Surgeons. He is the first person to be nominated and elected from the whole of Asia Pacific region to this prestigious position. While, all the previous Chairs hail from North America and Europe.
The award was given at the recently held World Orthopaedic Meet in Muscat, Oman, in which more than 3500 delegates from 127 countries participated to discuss the latest developments and technologies in orthopaedic surgery.
During the meet, the "Harold Tscherene teaching award" was awarded by the German polytrauma group to Dr S Rajasekaran.
While handing over the prestigious award, President of the German polytrauma group, Professor Hans Christoph Pape commended that the Ganga Score by Dr. Rajasekaran has significantly improved the understanding of surgeons in evaluating severely injured limbs.
"It also helps the surgeons focus on the severity of injury of every single tissue in the limb and assessing the patient as a whole by considering the co-morbidity of the patient. This has led to changes in concepts of treatment for the benefit of the patient", a release noted.
About Harold Tscherene Teaching Award
The award is named in honour of eminent Prof. Harald Tscherene, Germany who contributed immensely by evolving concepts in management of limb injuries. In the last 20 years, the award has been given only to six eminent surgeons from different parts of the world who have contributed by their original and innovative techniques or concepts which has radically changed and improved the treatment of severely injured patients.
It may be noted that this is the first time that the award is given to any surgeon from Asia.
'Ganga Hospital open injury score’ by Dr. S Rajasekaran
Dr S Rajasekaran was awarded this prestigious award for devising ‘Ganga Hospital open injury score’ which guides surgeons on the crucial decision of salvage in severely injured limbs. The Open Injury Score helps the surgeons to evaluate the severity of three components of the limb, the covering tissues, the functional tissues and the structural tissues on a scale of 1-5 and adds a co-morbidity score so that an accurate assessment of the severity and complexity of injury is made.
Unlike the other scores, this score devised by Dr. Rajasekaran guides the surgeons to predict the outcome based on various treatment parametres.
The score by Dr S Rajasekaran is now widely followed around the World and is also extensively published in all important textbooks of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery.
