Chennai: Registering his strong disapproval over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CMB) which was cleared by the Rajya Sabha today, MK Stalin, President of DMK has slammed that the CMB is a direct assault on secularism, equality and fraternity, which are essential principles of a democracy.

In an official release, the DMK party head alleged that it is unconstitutional to link citizenship with religion.

He also vehemently criticised AIADMK for voting for the bill. "AIADMK once again stands completely exposed for its decision to support this immoral legislation", he assailed.

MK Stalin has appealed to his party cadres to educate the people of Tamil Nadu on the disgraceful and deceitful act of AIADMK.

"If BJP's policies are agreeable for AIADMK, why still use Arignar Anna's name in their party name?", questioned Stalin who accused that CM, Edapadi Palanisamy has deceived the people of TN by backing the Citizen Amendment Bill.

"Over these years, the government led by Edapadi Palanisamy has earned several infamous titles. Now, with this bill they have earned yet another title for 'deceit'. AIADMK government has betrayed the minorities and people of Tamil Eelam", he accused.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 seeks to give citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zorastrian communities fleeing religious persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. The bill was cleared by the Rajya Sabha today, two days after its sailed through the Lok Sabha.
