According to the gazette notification, Coimbatore, Erode, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Dindigul, Madurai and Vellore will get Woman Mayors in the upcoming local body elections.
While Thoothukudi is reserved as General. It may be noted that for the first time a Woman will be appointed as Mayor in Coimbatore. In the past 20 years, the city had seen only men as mayors. Hence, this gazette notification confirming the reservation for woman for the post of Mayor has brought much joy among the woman cadres of political parties.
V. Gopalakrishnan of the Tamil Manila Congress was the first Mayor of Coimbatore. Next was T. Malaravan of the AIADMK followed by R. Venkatachalam of the Congress. Later, S.M. Velusamy of AIADMK held the position and after his resignation in 2014, the party fielded P. Rajkumar, the incumbent.
