The action comes after the parents of a 15-year-old girl from Iyyappan Nagar in Mettupalayam reported to the police of a sexual assault on their daughter by a man from their residential area.
According to Police reports, Sheikh Bawa (61) from MTP had been sexually assualting the girl for over several months. He had threatened to kill the girl, if she reported the incident to her parents.
Unable to withstand his sexual torture, the girl gathered courage and informed her parents who lodged a complaint at Thudiyalur police station. The police investigated the issue and arrested the 61-year-old accused and booked him under POCSO Act.
In a similar case, Mohammed Wasim (26) from Al Ameen Colony in South Ukkadam was booked under POCSO for attempting to lure a 14-year-old girl in the name of love. It is alleged that he tried to sexually assault the girl in her house in the absence of her parents.
Upon complaint, the RS Puram Women's Police Station registered a case under the POCSO Act and imprisoned Mohammed Wasim. Both the accused were later lodged in Coimbatore central prison.
To curb the rising sexual assaults on women and young girls, Inspector General of Police(West Zone) Periaiah City Police Commissioner, Sumit Saran and District Superintendent, Sujit Kumar are taking stringent measures to punish the offenders and book them under appropriate sections.
