Coimbatore: The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which was recently tabled by Home Minister Amit Shah in the Parliament has created a huge uproar and provoked widespread protests across the nation. While the bill awaits for its final ratification in Rajya Sabha to grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who faced persecution in their countries, several political and student organisations have labelled the bill as non-secular and against our constitutional ethos.

A series of protests in Coimbatore and neighboring districts by Islamic organisations like SDPI were staged against the bill who demanded an immediate withdrawal of the Bill saying it will divide the nation into two.

On Wednesday, members of Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration to show their disapproval against the bill. Members of SFI raised slogans in front of the Government Arts College here alleging the government for converting this nation into a Hindutuva nation by discriminating Muslims. They criticised that the bill is aimed to marginalise Muslims.

They strongly insisted that the government should revoke the Bill which was non-inclusive and did not grant citizenship rights to the Tamils of Eelam.

Protests against the Bill have turned violent in North Eastern parts of India, following which Army has been deployed to avoid untoward incidents.
