Coimbatore: MLA N. Karthik of Singanallur Constituency has announced that on behalf of their party a massive protest would be held in the City on December 13, condemning the inaction by the government to demolish the dilapidated housing units in Singanallur and replace them with new housing units.

"All pleas and petitions to build new housing units in Uzhavar Sandhai in Singanallur has fallen in deaf ears. Hundreds of residents are in danger, as the 35-year-old dilapidated housing unit might collapse anytime. Keeping in mind the safety of the people, the issue was even highlighted in the Assembly, however none have paid heed", alleged MLA Karthik at a Press Meet here, today.

Responding to his proposal to build new housing units, he accused that Deputy CM O. Paneerselvam has stated that there is no provision to replace old housing units with new ones.

"Does that mean people should risk their life in such battered buildings?", he slammed.

"The callousness by the government and the officials has forced us to organise a protest along with the people to fulfil our demands and condemn the government for being lackadaisical", he added.

The MLA apprised that the housing board has 960 houses which is spread over an area of 17.55 acres. And, that all the houses are in a very bad state with cracks all over the ceiling and the exterior.

He added that sub-standard construction and and ill maintanence has led to deterioration of the housing units.

The MLA also opined that the incessant rains in the past few months have further worsened the situation and hundreds of people's life is at stake.
