Tirupur: As part of efforts to check hoarding, the Centre on Monday made an announcement reducing stock holding limit for onion to 2 tonnes from 5 tonnes for retail traders.
In view of the same, Food Supply Officer, Murugan along with his team on Tuesday held inspections to check onion hoarding in Tirupur markets.
As Onions imported from Egypt are sold between Rs. 35 and 50 per kg, the inspection ensured that traders do not stock onions than the permitted limits.
During an inspection at onion godowns at Thennapalayam in Tirupur, the traders were advised on the permissible stock at godowns.
"Despite soaring prices, the demand is firm. Onions from Karnataka are currently being sold at Rs. 100 to Rs 140 per kg and onions imported from Egypt are being sold at Rs 35 to Rs 50 per kg", said the onion traders.
