Coimbatore: A 33-year-old man, from Coimbatore drowned in the Bhavani river near Mettupalayam on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly while trying to click a selfie, police said.

Elango (33) from Kovanur, near Periyanaickenpalayam, and two of his friends from Coimbatore went on a day trip to Bhavani river near Bathrakali Amman temple in Mettupalayam, today.
After getting drunk, the trio went to Nellithurai bridge. While two of them decided to stay back, Elango went near the river to click a selfie. According to reports, Elango had stood on the edge of the parapet wall of the bridge and tripped off.
His friends and other passers-by who witnessed the incident rushed to rescue him but he was washed away. The fire and police department rushed to the spot and commenced the rescue operations.
Even after two hours, Elango's body is reported missing. The fire personnel along with the locals are searching his corpse using coracles.
