Coimbatore: The residents of Dr. Radhakrishnan Street in Seeranaickenpalayam here have petitioned to the District Collector on Monday against the decision of a private cell phone operator to install mobile tower in their area.
Alleging that the tower could pose serious issues like health hazards to the residents including radiation issues, one of the petitioner, Chinthamani stated that around 250 houses are located in the area and installation of cell phone tower could cause serious health issues and pollution.
She also noted that, "We've heard people say of the hazardous effects of the radiation emitted from cell phone towers. Hence, the district administration should pay heed to our request and stop the cell phone company from installing the tower."
"As the height of tower is estimated to be more than 100 feet, during heavy downpours chances of the tower getting uprooted is high. During such eventualities, several houses located below the tower could get collapsed", lamented Banumathy, another resident.
As the model code of conduct is in effect, the petitioners had to drop the petition in the grievance box at the District Collectorate.
