Coimbatore: The coordinator of Transgender Associations, Revathi has requested the President not to approve the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, proposed by the Central government.
A press meet was organized by various transgender groups in Coimbatore. The coordinator of the groups, Revathi expressed objection to the amendment of the bill saying, "The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019 passed by the Central government is regressive enough to put us back by 50 years. We strongly object to this bill."
"The Supreme Court allowed us to lead a liberal life in 2014, however this amendment is against the judgement of the Court," she remarked.
Insisting that Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) is illegal, Transwoman Revathi opined "Violent abuses and assaults on transgenders should attract the same amount of punishment that is meted out to offenders of women and children. However, this bill directs only two years of punishment for these offences", she added.
The National Legal Services Authority's (NALSA) case in 2014 recognized transgender as the third gender and stated that insisting on Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) for change of gender was illegal.
"The recent bill by the Centre does not mention any reservations in education and job opportunities, which is against NALSA judgement", she said.
"Transgenders should be issued ID cards, like practices in Kerala. Arrangements should be made at hospitals and PHCs in all districts to offer us surgeries free of cost", she requested.
On behalf of all the transgender community, she requested the President to reconsider the bill and not approve it.
