Coimbatore: Around 36 SDPI members courted arrest for attempting to lay siege at the railway station urging to revoke the Central government's Citizenship Bill.

Recently, the Union Cabinet has approved the Citizenship Amendment Bill to be tabled in Parliament. Various parties have protested that amendments have been made to grant non-Muslim citizenship to migrants from neighbouring countries.

In this backdrop, the SDPI attempted to demonstrate in front of the Coimbatore railway station. The protesters claimed that the BJP government is implementing various laws to deceive the minority population and that the bill is an act of State autonomy. They said that the bill should be withdrawn, otherwise there would be protests nationwide.

Subsequently, the police arrested 36 SDPI members who took part in the protest.
