Coimbatore: RO treated purified drinking water can now be accessed by the hundreds of public who throng the Ukkadam bus stand, as members of a self help group and a Delhi-based private firm from the city have jointly launched a 'Water ATM' at Ukkadam bus stand.

With a dispensable capacity of 2000 liters, people can hereon get a litre of purified water for just Rs.1. When the initiative is scaled to multiple places like large establishments, prepaid rechargable smart cards will be provided to the people to buy water in cans, said the members of the self help group.
They briefed that everytime water is drawn from the ATM, the said amount will be deducted from the card which can be recharged using PayTM or Google Pay. A 20 litre can is priced at Rs.7 and a maximum of two cans be purchased at a time. For bulk orders, per can rate will be fixed at Rs.20. For every can of water sold, the Women's Self Help group will earn Rs.12 as profit; Rs.6 for the Delhi-based private company and Rs. 2 for Corporation.
They mentioned that such water ATM's are already functional in Erode, Salem and the Nilgiris. However, this is the first time a water ATM is setup in Coimbatore. These ATM's will be functional round the clock and depending on the need of the people, more Water ATMs will be at up in the city, they said.
"130 locations have been ear-marked for the purpose", they noted.
