Though the residents of the house had a lucky escape, the houses suffered severe damages as window panes, doors and roofs were tossed and pulled down by the herd which had camped near Cinchona Tea Estate at Valparai in Coimbatore District.
Lawson Division and Ryan Division are part of the Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Company. And, there are more than two thousand workers employed at the estate. "Since the housing quarters are at close proximity to Chinnakallar and Periyakallar areas which are encircled by dense forest, incidents of wild elephants straying into housing campus has become a regular phenomenon", lament the workers.
On the wee hours of Wednesday, a herd of 30 wild elephants that had camped in the area entered the workers' quarters and damaged the houses.
Upon information, the forest officials chased the large herd of elephants into the forest. The forest department have intensified their patrolling to ensure the elephants herd doesn't become habitual for the herd to enter housing quarters.
