1 tonne of artificially ripened bananas seized in Tirupur

Tirupur: Food Safety Officials on Sunday seized one tonne of bananas which were artificially ripened using chemicals in Tirupur.

Tirupur: Food Safety Officials on Sunday seized one tonne of bananas which were artificially ripened using chemicals in Tirupur.

Upon a tip off that vendors are spraying ethylene solution diluted in water on fruits, to speed up the ripening process, the officials headed by Vijaya Lalithambigai carried out an inspection at Thennampalayam market area in Tirupur. 



During the inspection, it was found that a vendor, Rasu from Gobichettipayam had sprayed chemicals on bananas to ripen it faster. Around one tonne of such bananas were seized and destroyed by the food safety officials.

The officials warned that legal action will be taken against vendors for using chemicals for ripening fruits.
