Coimbatore: The city police on Sunday arrested two men for selling banned tobacco products at Variety Hall Road in Coimbatore. Police also seized Rs 30 lakhs worth gutka from their godown.
Coimbatore: The city police on Sunday arrested two men for selling banned tobacco products at Variety Hall Road in Coimbatore. Police also seized Rs 30 lakhs worth gutka from their godown.
The duo were identified as J. Pramodkumar (37) and J. Vinodhkumar, (28). A police said informed that the offenders were arrested based on a tip-off that tobacco products are being sold in attractive packaging and various flavours to lure the youngster, especially school and college students.
Following this, a police team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) L.Balaji Saravanan conducted surprise raids at shops and godowns on Variety Hall Road on Sunday. In the raid, they seized banned gutka and pan masala worth around Rs. 30 lakhs at a godown owned by the two arrested accused.
According to a police officer, more than 30 cases have been filed on gutka peddlers and tobacco products worth Rs. 1 Crore has been seized in the past month.
The police have apprised that the raids will continue.
