Coimbatore: In a bid to create awareness on HIV, on World AIDS day which is observed on December 1 of every year, government along with NGO's and social activists in the city organise several awareness sessions to create awareness among the masses.
Coimbatore: In a bid to create awareness on HIV, on World AIDS day which is observed on December 1 of every year, government along with NGO's and social activists in the city organise several awareness sessions to create awareness among the masses.
One such social activist, Raja Sethu Murali from the city garnered the attention of the public through his novel way of awareness by wearing a dress which had HIV awareness slogans printed in it.
Talking to media, the activist said that, "Through the concerted efforts of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and government, the number of people affected with HIV has drastically come down. However, the myths surrounding the disease still prevails among the masses. Debunking the myths and misconceptions about HIV will help bring inclusivity of HIV-affected people which is the need of the hour."
He added that though there is no cure for HIV, but antiretroviral treatment will keep the affected live a healthy life. Touching, talking or sharing food with HIV-affected person will not lead to spread of the disease.
"It's important to educate ourselves about HIV and not fall prey to false assumptions", he urged.
The theme for 2019 is "Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Community by Community".
