Organised by the Hindu Religious Charitable and Endowments board, the camp will commence on the first week of December till January 30 at the banks of Bhavani River in Thekkampatti in Mettupalayam.

The camp which is the brainchild of former late CM Jayalalithaa was started in 2003 to provide a holistic rejuvenation experience to elephants of temples and mutts in TN.

A team of experienced veterinarians would be stationed at the camp throughout the period to closely monitoring the pachyderms and attend to their medical needs. Also, nutritious diet including ragi, rice, horse grams, sugarcane and green grams and herbal medical supplements would be administered to the elephants.

Last year 28 elephants took part in the camp and this year the count could be a around 26, say official sources.

Until 2013, the camp was held in Thepakkadu area in Mudumalai which was later shifted to Thekkampatti in Mettupalayam. Thousands of people in and around the district throng the camp to see the animals being fed, bathe and relax at the camp.
