Coimbatore: Request to add additional coaches to increase space in the MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train has been raised by the passengers.
The Salem division of Southern railways launched the MEMU train service between MTP and Coimbatore on October 31, 2019. With eight interlinked coaches, the MEMU trains operate at higher speed compared to regular passenger train and has many additional facilities like more space for standing, wider doors, better.lighting, toilet facilities, mesh for Windows and 36 CCTV cameras.
Over 50,000 passengers, predominantly school, college students, workers and patients who visit hospitals in Coimbatore largely benefit from the train service.
Though facilities have been enhanced, the passengers have complained that compared to the earlier one which had 11 coaches, the new MEMU train has only 8 coaches.
"Due to space constraint, elderly people and ailing passengers are unable to board the train, instead opt opting for other means of transport. Hence, more than 1500 passengers are unable to use the train service", lament the passengers.
The passengers have requested the Southern Railways to add additional coaches to the MEMU train to aid more passengers use the service.
