Coimbatore: In an incident that is surely a sign of the time, graduates from different streams including BSc, MSc, BE and M.Com were among the several hundred candidates at the job interview for the post of "Sanitary Workers' held at City Corporation on Wednesday.
Coimbatore: In an incident that is surely a sign of the time, graduates from different streams including BSc, MSc, BE and M.Com were among the several hundred candidates at the job interview for the post of "Sanitary Workers' held at City Corporation on Wednesday.
While some of the graduates were already employed they had reportedly applied for the sanitary workers post to quench their government job thirst.
Among the graduates who had applied for sanitary worker post was Mythili, a BE graduate who said ,"I need to support my family. Am the sole bread winner for my family after my father's death. As this is a government job, I don't mind doing sanitary work, as long as I can support my family."
Among the applicants, a majority of them were contract sanitary workers with an overall work experience of 5 to 15 years. Maraippan working as a contract sanitary worker for over 10 years said he wanted to apply for a permanent post, since a job at Corporation would ensure job security for rest of his life.
According to Corporation sources, nearly 7,000 candidates have applied for the post of 549 grade-I sanitary workers. To be eligibile for the post, candidates must know to read and write Tamil and must have completed at least class X. The monthly pay for the sanitary workers is around Rs. 15,700 to 50,000.
The interviews that commenced on Wednesday will go on till Friday. The shortlisted applicants will be notified by the Corporation later, an official said.
