He added that synthetic fabrics and performance garments are going to be the two most promising segments in the textile industry.

Thiagarajan was delivering the keynote address at the second edition of Weaves 2019, South India’s premier textile fair, a four-day exhibition and conference, inaugurated here today. The event is being organised by Texvalley in association with CII.
Weaves 2019 has attracted the participation of over 200 exhibitors representing a wide cross section of the textile industry from yarns, fabrics, handlooms, and readymade garments. The event featured Padmashri Dr A Sakthivel, Vice Chairman, AEPC & CMD, Poppys Group, presenting Young Inspirations of India awards to ten successful personalities from various segments of the textiles industry.
He said that “the textile industry accounts for 5% of India’s GDP and 13% of the country’s export earnings. The industry employs about 50 million people. It has proved to be highly productive and globally competitive across the value chain - from farm to fibre. However, its future depends on sustainable manufacturing practices, transparency, and its readiness to transform itself into a circular economy.”
In his special address, T. Rajkumar, Chairman, CII, pointed out the Indian textile industry is highly-fragmented. It has been facing unprecedented challenges in the recent past. Though the global recession is a main factor for the setbacks faced by the industry, the imports of yarns, fabrics, and garments from Bangladesh and SAARC region pose a major threat to the local industry. He urged the Centre to help the industry in the areas of export promotion, access to working capital, and loan restructuring.
Prabhu Dhamodharan, Convenor, Indian Texpreneurs Federation, in his address, said that nowhere in India the textile industry is well established and vibrant than it is in the State of Tamil Nadu. The textile business in the state is nurtured by entrepreneurs with their own investment for over three generations. There is a major textile venture or a textile cluster for every 60 kilometres. It would need over 1.5 lakh crore investment to replicate Tamil Nadu’s textile business infrastructure in any other state.
Addressing the participants, Dr Prakash Vasudevan, Director, SITRA, said that various key segments of the textile industry, including spinning, are the most productive and cost competitive in the world. However, the need of the hour for the industry is to embrace sustainable practices to face emerging regulatory challenges. He said that SITRA with its industry partnership is working on several green manufacturing processes for the textile sector.
M. Balasubramanian, Deputy Director & Officer in Charge, Regional Textile Commission Office, in his address, said that the textile industry should do its best to improve the standard of living of its employees. About 80% of the employees who work in the textile industry are daily wage earners. This should be changed by bringing employee benefits on par with other organised industries.
In his welcome address, C. Devarajan, Past Chairman, CII Erode & Vice Chairman, Erode Textile Mall Pvt Ltd (Texvalley), said that the annual event is expected to benefit about 4000 business units in the textile sector. Nitin Mittal, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Research and Technology India Pvt Ltd, in his address, said that SMEs in the textile industry should be made successful by helping them embrace digital transformation.
P. Periyaswamy, Chairman, Texvalley, was present in the event. P. Raajashekar, Managing Director, Texvalley, proposed a vote of thanks.

The event witnessed the signing of the MoUs regarding ATAL Incubation Mission by NITI Ayog, Government of India, and the initiatives of 5P Ventures for the promotion of rural artisans involved in the extraction and value addition of banana fibre. The event also witnessed the product launch of GRIN, a technology developed by SITRA and a partner industry concerning the green reduction of indigo dyes in denim products.
