Coimbatore: DMK members in Valparai laid siege to the Municipality office in Valparai as the officials headed by Municipal Commissioner, Saravana Babu ordered to evacuate 24 street vendors for encroaching public walkways.
There are 24 shops occupying the pavement on the stretch between municipality office to Gandhi Statue in Valparai. Despite multiple notices urging the shop keepers to relocate their shop to an alternate place, the shop owners continued to encroach the platform and create inconvenience to the public.
Citing the deadline on November 27, Municipal officials headed by Municipal Commissioner, Saravanababu removed the shops today. Enraged by the action, the shopkeepers entered into a verbal tiff with the municipality staff. Following this, Inspector Balamurugan and a team of police personnel were deployed in the area, as a matter of precaution.
Standing in support with the shopkeepers, DMK members in Valparai laid siege to the Municipality office and argued with the Commissioner on the encroachment issue.
Later, a meeting between Municipal Commissioner Saravana Babu, DMK Coimbatore South Secretary Thendral Selvaraj, District Secretary Palpandi and shopkeepers was held.
After the talks, Deputy Commissioner of Municipality, Raghupathy and President of the traders (pavement) Dhanapandian agreed to provide an alternate location to the 24 shops, shortly. The officials also warned that all encroachments between post office to the bus stand stretch must be removed in one week.
