Coimbatore: To create awareness on road traffic using school students, the 'Kutty Cops' initiative by Uyir trust is gaining more momentum, as the kids showcased their understanding for the cause by displaying it through art and inspiring slogans.
Coimbatore: To create awareness on road traffic using school students, the 'Kutty Cops' initiative by Uyir trust is gaining more momentum, as the kids showcased their understanding for the cause by displaying it through art and inspiring slogans.
Earlier, as part of the Kutty Cops initiative, a drawing competition was organised for kids and the best of the lot was displayed as an exhibition at Ganga Hospital here on Sunday.
Over 600 students from various schools exhibited their thoughtful art, on 'Road Safety' which was inaugurated by Dr Med Claude Martin Jr. Managing Director, AO Alliance, Switzerland in the presence of Sumit Sharan, City Police Commissioner and Dr.S. Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of Uyir.
As a part of the event, various cultural programs like dance, mime and drama stressing on the importance of road safety and traffic rules were performed by the students of different schools.
"Involving students in road safety is a commendable initative by Uyir trust. Though, we are facing the same kind of issues in my home town, we don't have initiatives like this to address deaths on road", said Dr Med Claude Martin Jr.
He concluded by quoting a slogan written by one of the Kutty Cop in a painting which read "Do not learn safety through accidents".
"Going forward, this kutty cops initiative will make a huge impact in the city. As of now, every three minutes, we are losing a life on the road. If this continues at this pace, then in the next 10 years it will be three deaths, every minute. Already Coimbatore is in the second place in terms of deaths on road. So, these Kutty Cops are playing a pivotal role to reduce the accidents and instill traffic sense among the public", stated Dr S Rajasekaran, Managing Trustee of Uyir.
Talking at the event, Commissioner of Police claimed that comparing to 2017, deaths due to road accidents has drastically reduced by 50% and road accidents by 43%. "We are responsible for our own safety and children should insist their parents to wear helmets, buckle up seat belts and follow traffic rules every single time. This could further reduce road accidents and make Coimbatore an accident free city", opined the Commissioner.
Prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners of the competition by the first of honour Dr Med Claude Martin Jr. from Switzerland.
Others present at the event were Balasundaram, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central, Dr. Shanmuganathan, Founder of Ganga Hospital and Sathyanarayanan, HM Secretary, Mani Higher Secondary School and members of Uyir.
