Coimbatore: Dilapidated roads in Mettupalayam which had not been attended to by the Municipality has prompted unusual protests. Localites protested by planting banana trees into the potholes which disrupted traffic for nearly an hour.

With underground sewerage work being undertaken in all the wards of the Coimbatore District Municipality, areas that had been dug up had not been filled up again and covered properly. This caused potholes that plagued commuters and even causing accidents.

The Ooty-Mettupalayam road particularly involves vehicles passing through a one-way, near the Old Municipality Office on Subramaniyar Temple Street. The road, however, is filled with potholes and uneven surfaces. The recent rains played havoc with these potholes causing unsuspecting commuters to be stuck in these potholes. Even after many complaints, the Municipality had allegedly not taken any action.

Localites who could no longer bear the indifference of the Municipality decided to protest against them by planting banana trees into the holes on the road. They also raised slogans about the bad condition of roads all across Mettupalyam and the indifferent attitude of the Municipality.

Police and Municipal officials who arrived at the site of protest held a round of talks with the protestors. Only after they promised immediate remedial action for the bad roads, the protest was called off.
