Coimbatore: The Madhapatti Youth Group has petitioned the District Revenue Officer and insisted action on liquor shops that remain open past the Government-stipulated timings.
TASMAC Shop No.2227 functioning in Madhampati Panchayat under the Thondamuthur Union has been open for the last 10 years and has remained open past the Government-stipulated time. The Madhampatti Youth Group petitioned the District Revenue Officer urging action against the TASMAC outlet for selling liquor round the clock.

They alleged that the liquor shop which was kept open for 24 hours is situated right behind the Agricultural Cooperative Bank leading to inebriated people sleeping at the doorstep of the bank. People who visit the bank have been facing a lot of inconvenience due to such people sleeping at the entrance of the bank, whilst also making the entire environment uncomfortable for those who visit the bank.
The shop is also located in a surreptitious spot and this enables students to buy drinks who then get addicted to alcohol. The youth group demanded to change the location of the outlet as well as to stop illegal sale of liquor.
In a similar case, the members of the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram too submitted a petition to the District Revenue Officer to stop the establishment of a liquor shop in the Anamalai region. They have noted that there is a Panchayat Union Elementary School, Community Hall and Palwadi near the proposed site for the liquor shop.
