Coimbatore: 'Ezhilmigu Kovai', a two-day exhibition to create awareness about the segregation of bio-degradable and non-biodegradable wastes by the Coimbatore Corporation was inaugurated here and graced by S.P. Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme on Saturday.
Coimbatore: 'Ezhilmigu Kovai', a two-day exhibition to create awareness about the segregation of bio-degradable and non-biodegradable wastes by the Coimbatore Corporation was inaugurated here and graced by S.P. Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme on Saturday.
The function was presided by District Collector K. Rajamani and Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer J. Sravan Kumar.
Around 81 stalls including smart city projects, 24x7 drinking water supply project, demonstration of removal of human wastes using robots, disposal ways of medical and food waste, solid waste management, rainwater harvesting and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic and many more were displayed at the expo at Suguna Kalyana Mandapam on Avinashi road.
The Minister visited the stalls and inquired about the City's waste management practices.
Solid waste management is a very crucial and integral part of the many works carried by the corporation. In a bid to reduce wastes generated by households and bulk waste generators, the Corporation has organised this expo to educate the public on innovative ways of waste management.
Approximately 850 tonnes to 1100 tonnes of solid wastes are collected from houses and commercial places and segregated before sending them to Vellalore dumpyard for recycling.
The exhibition is set up in such a way that apartment complexes, public hospitals, hotels, marriage halls, departmental stores and meat shops would become aware of effective solid waste management techniques.
Later, the Minister flagged off ten heavy motor vehicles worth Rs.60 lakhs which will be used to collect degradable and non-biodegradable wastes and dispose them effectively.
Public, representatives of various organisations and officials from Corporation were present.
