The newly added lake will be rejuvenated under the Smart City Project for Rs. 60 crore.
With eight lakes in Coimbatore under Coimbatore Corporation- Sinaganallur lake, Vaalankulam, Peria kulam, Muthannan kulam, Krishnampathy and Narasampathy, CCMC has taken over Kurichi lake for a lease period of 90 years. The lake, which was earlier maintained by the Public Works Department, has now been leased out to the City Corporation. A government order has been published a couple of days ago
With the lake under CCMC, lake rejuvenation and beautification projects at the Kurichi Lake will be taken under the Smart Cities project. A detailed project report for 60 crores has already been submitted to the government and now work will be carried out since the lake is under the civic body's ambit. Under the smart city project a sewage treatment plant facility shall be established at the lake, along with the walking rack, bicycle track, children's park, open gyms, and musical fountains on the lake bund.
Speaking on this Corporation Commissioner Sravan Kumar Jatavat said , "Kurichi lake has been taken on a lease for 90 years from public works department. We received the order a couple of days ago. The government order also provided a few conditions to the corporation to prevent the Kurichi lake from getting polluted with drainage water. Similarly, the corporation has been told not to decrease the level of the bunds while carrying out the rejuvenation work, the lake should be maintained free of encroachments, the tributaries of Kurichi lake and its existing infrastructure must not be changed."
The lease amount is yet to be decided and is expected to be intimated soon.
