The Nilgiris: With an aim to encourage better educational opportunities for tribal children, on behalf of the Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association (NAWA) the annual day celebrations of the Nilgiris District Adivasi Children was held today at Kotagiri.

The Nilgiris: With an aim to encourage better educational opportunities for tribal children, on behalf of the Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association (NAWA) the annual day celebrations of the Nilgiris District Adivasi Children was held today at Kotagiri. 

NAWA has been supporting tribal children, from all parts of the Nilgiris including Kotagiri, Gudalur and Pandalur areas. 

As part of the celebrations, the students of Victoria Armstrong Memorial Nursery and Primary School (VAMS) showcased their talents through varied cultural programmes. A short drama on environment and conservation garnered the attention of the spectators. 

Addressing the gathering, social activist and transgender woman, Apsara Reddy said "The government should priortise on empowering and enriching the livelihood of the indigenous people in the country. Empowering the tribal people will boost their self confidence, especially children who are equally intelligent and talented compared to the elite in urban."

She opined that parents from tribal community should allow their children to access education and motivate them to achieve higher positions. Apsara Reddy also emphasised that students from tribal communities must be exposed to sports and non-academic activities.   

Citing her life experiences, she said that the perseverance and determination will help oneself attain greater heights.
