Coimbatore: Reiterating their demand to ensure agricultural lands are spared from erecting high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission towers, the farmers along with MP P.R. Natarajan jointly handed over a petition to the District Collector on Monday.

The MP submitted a petition with several demands including civic issues like damaged roads. In his petition, he pointed the plight of the Dalit people of Varapalayam Village here who have been denied of a burial site.
Pointing at the pathetic condition of the roads in both rural and urban areas of the district, the MP requested the Collector to order the concerned officials on war footing to repair the damaged roads which pose serious danger to the motorists.
Among other demands, the petition strongly emphasised on safeguarding the coconut farms at Sulthanpet and adjoining villages here which would fall prey to HVDCs to be laid by the Power Grid Corporation of India and Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation.
"While there are three ways in which the project could be accomplished by the power grid company, the company had opted to lay HVDC in a way which would end detrimental to the acres of coconut farms in Sulthanpet, Senjerimalai and adjoining areas. However, deviously the company in the bank loan application has promised of choosing the option which wouldn't damage the farmlands", alleged the MP.
As the project implementation is unclear and threatening, the District Collector should ensure to safeguard the farmlands and the livelihood of the famers, the MP requested the Collector.
Briefing the press after the meeting, the MP apprised that the Collector has promised to take care of the issue and the farmers have expressed their consent.
The MP warned that if the demands of the farmers are not met, he along with his party members and the famers of the region would lay seige to the District Collectorate office on November 18.
