Coimbatore: The district administration has asked for a report on the status of Anganwadi buildings in Coimbatore. There are a total of 1,697 Anganwadi centres functioning in the district, with 14 operating in rural areas and four in the Municipality.

Over 1.5 lakh children study in these Anganwadi centres which function under the Integrated Child Development Program of the Social Welfare Department. Children between ages 3 to 5 are admitted here, with basic education and play provided for the children who are cared for at the Anganwadi from 10 am to 4 pm. Most of the families in which both parents work for a living are dependent on Anganwadi centres.

Also, there are 177 Anganwadi centres in the district which have rented space in private buildings. These structures are inadequate for children to play and sleep. Officials say that the Government has not taken any action for years on their request to have its own building. In this scenario, the District administration has asked for reports on the current damaged Anganwadi buildings. Depending on the submission of the report, it will be known whether the damaged Anganwadi buildings will be built or renovated.

According to an Integrated Child Development Project Officer, "Over a 100 Anganwadi centres operating in their own buildings are operating in unsafe conditions. The safety of children and employees has thus been questioned. The district administration is currently asking for reports for constructing a new building and repair the dilapidated buildings. A report on damaged buildings will be submitted soon," said the official.
