About 5000 to 7000 outpatients, and over 2000 inpatients receive treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Coimbatore, every day. Similarly, people from various districts such as Tirupur, Erode and Nilgiris arrive at CMCH to receive treatment. Many from the neighbouring states of Kerala and Karnataka also throng CMCH for treatment.
55-year-old Veeramal from Gobichettipalayam, Erode district was admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital with abdominal pain. Doctors who examined him later found a large cancerous tumour in the kidney. By re-angio embolization the size and weight of the tumour was first reduced to 8 cm then later removed through surgery. This operation was performed for the first time at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore.
After a press conference was held at the Government Hospital in Coimbatore on the success of Veeramal's surgery, even as media personnel filtered out, the kin of another patient who had been in agony for over 10 days complained that the hospital administration was not treating their patient.
The son of the patient Anthony who was in anguish said, "My father was admitted to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore 10 days ago.
No appropriate treatment has been provided thus far. Doctors and assistants are needed to perform an MRI scan. The staff at GH ask for Rs.100 every time they are asked to push the stretcher to take a patient into the scan centre and there too they are refusing to take a scan. Without the co-operation of these staff members, even an MRI scan has not been taken yet for my father. I don't even feed my father every day, because of the specifications for an MRI scan. His health condition has worsened since the time he was admitted to GH," he lamented.
