Coimbatore: Much to the delight of the farmers, the 15-acre Belladhi pond built by Tipu Sultan in Mettupalyam is overflowing due to the northeast monsoon rains, after 15 long years.
Coimbatore: Much to the delight of the farmers, the 15-acre Belladhi pond built by Tipu Sultan in Mettupalyam is overflowing due to the northeast monsoon rains, after 15 long years.
The Belladhi pond near Mettupalayam is spread across 15 acres and was the major reservoir for agriculture in eastern Karamadai panchayat union area. The pond was built by combining the water bodies of Katanji mountain in Periyanaickenpalayam and Ezherumaipallam in Palamalai forest. When the pond is filled to the brim, about 4,000 acres of agricultural land depending on groundwater gets irrigated.
The Belladhi pond which had run dry this past 15 years is now inundated with surplus water owing to the current northeast monsoon rains.
It reached its full capacity and the excess water has been discharged into the dam. The pond was de-silted before the monsoon rains and after 15 long years, the pond is now overflowing with water.
Farmers living near the Belladhi pond are overjoyed since all the wells, borewells and streams situated around 20 km away from the pond are now brimming with water than can be used for agricultural purposes for almost a year.
It is to be noted that the surplus water from the pond will once again reach Ezherumaipallam and will flow through the Bhavani river and in turn flow into the Bhavani Sagar Dam.
