Coimbatore: As many as 51 participants from various walks of life are in the process of assessing and updating the butterfly and odonate population in Coimbatore, as part of the ongoing survey which entered day two, today.
Coimbatore: As many as 51 participants from various walks of life are in the process of assessing and updating the butterfly and odonate population in Coimbatore, as part of the ongoing survey which entered day two, today.
The survey which is being jointly organised by the Coimbatore Forest Division and Act for Butterflies began on Friday. It aimed at making ample use of the migration season of butterflies and help increase the number of identified species from 270 to more in Coimbatore. Up to 79 odonate (dragonflies and damsel flies) species have also been recorded in Coimbatore thus far, in various seasons.
15 teams including personnel from Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Chennai, Madurai and Trichy in Tamil Nadu along with participants from Karnataka and Kerala are scouring the forests and lakes of Coimbatore, to get accurate numbers of the butterfly and odonate population.
An orientation program was held for the survey team on Friday, led by the Assistant Conservator of Forests, C Dinesh Kumar and a presentation on butterflies was made by Mohan Prasanth from Act for Butterflies.
The survey is to conclude by noon, on Sunday.
