Nilgiris: The Government has allocated Rs. 82 crores to Government Departments for relief work to help restore rain-hit Nilgiris. The incessant rains that lashed Nilgiris in the past two weeks left roads damaged and some houses in ruins.

Over 500 acres of crops were submerged in areas including Muthorai, Palada, Emerald, Avalanche and Ithalar which were worst-hit. Most local roads maintained by local bodies were damaged. Currently, on behalf of the district administration, temporary roads have been re-laid and traffic has been restored. Relief measures have been undertaken for people who have lost their homes. Temporary housing is also being built near Ithalar. After reviewing the destruction and damages in the district, the district administration had asked the Government to provide necessary funds.
The State Government has allocated Rs.82 crores. Accordingly, as part of the first phase, the Highway Department has been given Rs.50 crores; the Horticulture Department has been allotted Rs.66 lakhs and local authorities have been allocated Rs. 1.9 crores.
The crop insurance amount for farmers who have insured their crop will also be given to the Horticulture Department. Nilgiris District Collector, Innocent Divya reassured locals saying, "A sum of Rs. 82 crores has been earmarked as the first phase to deal with the impact of the southwest monsoon. Rehabilitation of affected areas will be completed and farmers will be compensated."
