Nilgiris: The Forest Department is investigating the death of a male elephant calf at the Jagalikowda Elephant Passage in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserv

Residents in the area reported to the forest officials of stench emanating from the elephant passage near the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Later, the Deputy Director, Srikanth, Forest Guards Mariappan, Kandan and Murali found and examined the body of the elephant calf.

In the presence of forest officials and wildlife enthusiasts, the Masinagudi government veterinarian, Kochalan conducted an autopsy and it was ascertained that the elephant calf had died two days ago. It is assumed that right after childbirth when mother elephants try to make the calf stand by kicking it, the kick sometimes can injure a calf. This could have been one of the reasons for the elephant calf to have been injured in this case, resulting in its death according to forest officials who are investigating the death of the calf.
