Coimbatore: The State Highways Department has begun removing encroachments at the Selvapuram Sivalaya junction along the Perur-Selvapuram road, since Wednesday. Encroachments along the state highway are being removed to facilitate laying of the four-lane road from Coimbatore city limits till Siruvani.
According to sources at the Highways Department, the work for the four-lane road will commence after encroachments are removed, possibly by today. "The Department is removing encroachments now along a 2.5 km stretch for the four-lane road which will be laid at an estimated cost of Rs. 6 crores. Highways have certain norms and measurements regarding the road width, and any building or structure that has violated this norm will be removed," said a senior official .
The eviction notice had been issued a few months ago to residences and buildings, and hence those who had not vacated till Wednesday, were evicted. Alternate accomodation has been provided already at Kovaipudur for about 115 families and the Tamil Nadu Housing Board officials have confirmed that anyone who were not alloted houses earlier would be included now.
