Coimbatore: In an attempt to make optimum use of butterfly migration in the district, over 50 butterfly and dragonfly watchers are to carry out a three-day survey in Coimbatore forests, beginning from Friday.
Coimbatore: In an attempt to make optimum use of butterfly migration in the district, over 50 butterfly and dragonfly watchers are to carry out a three-day survey in Coimbatore forests, beginning from Friday.
Jointly organised by the Coimbatore Forest Division and 'Act for Butterflies,' the survey would look to add to the number of butterflies and odonates in all seven forest ranges here.
According to organisers, about 270 butterflies and 79 odonate (dragonflies and damsel flies) species have been recorded in Coimbatore thus far in various seasons.
“We spotted around 199 butterfly species and 36 odonate species during the survey last year. With the season expected to be at its peak this week, we could increase the tally this year,” stated an organiser.
15 teams including personnel from Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Chennai, Madurai and Trichy in Tamil Nadu along with participants from Karnataka and Kerala will be involved in the survey. They would proceed to their respective fields after an orientation programme and inauguration by District Forest Officer, D Venkatesh.
“Butterflies play an important role in our ecosystem. Their sizes and roles may differ, but if bees and butterflies are not pollinating, there would be no propagation,” said Mohan Prasath, Act for Butterflies.
